Citron progress

My little shawl is slowly moving along and getting bigger. It has become my evening TV knitting project because it's simple and I don't really need to pay attention most of the time. Only two rows out of the twenty row pattern repeat require some counting.

It's a fun knit even though it looks like boring stockinette stitch. The pattern alternates between plain sections and ruffled sections and therefore creates a feeling of "just a little bit more, so I can see what it will look like". However, like all shawls that start at the center back, the first part is always the easiest, because the rows are so much smaller. I'm on the fourth ruffle now and the rows are getting big.

I apologize for the late night pictures; I tried to fix them a little but nothing can make up for bad light :)

Each ruffled section ends with a lot of k2tog and on the first one I noticed little loops on the back of the shawl.

I was a little worried at first, but fortunately they seemed to even out a lot after I knit the next rows.

I have two ideas about why this might have happened. The first is the fairly loose gauge for a laceweight yarn. The second reason I can think of is the way I knit two stitches together. Most times I find that I have to pull a little (with the needle) at each of the two stitches before I knit them together. This makes them looser and it's much easier to get the needle through both of them. It's a simple thing and I'm used to it, so I do it without even thinking about it.

In case you're wondering, I insert the needle into each stitch knitwise and pull gently at the front part of the stitch.

This yarn is lovely and incredibly soft but it's also a little sticky. So, I have been pulling at the stitches and I think that's what is causing the loops. Or possibly, a combination of that and the gauge. I think uneven stitches are more noticable in loose fabric.

Do you k2tog that way too? Am I the only one who does that? I know that every knitter is different, so I'm curious about what you do! I love how every new knitting project gives me something new to think about :)

Anyway, if you knit this and if you get the little loops in the back, don't worry; they will even out - although I don't know how that happened either!

  1. I've been wanting to knit Citron for a while now, but I'm afraid of the millions of stitches I'll have on my needles if I do knit it.. We'll see if I ever get around to actually knitting it.. Love yours tho. :) Oh, and I do my k2tog the same way.

  2. Is there a way of doing 2tog without a little pull?

Citron hasn't grabbed me but watching your grow is arousing some interest!

  3. It looks lovely and fresh. I think what's left of the loops will disappear with blocking.
