Starting out - Knit and Crochet Blog Week Day 1

How and when did you begin knitting/crocheting? Was it a skill passed down through generations of your family, or something you learned from Knitting For Dummies? What or who made you pick up the needles/hook for the first time? Was it the celebrity knitting ‘trend’ or your great aunt Hilda?

I tried to learn how to knit many times. The first time I must have been about ten years old. My mother knit a lot when I was younger; she made me adorable sweaters and skirts and I loved them. So, one day I asked her to teach me, because it looked like fun. It was not fun at all. I just didn't get it, it was all wrong, the yarn got all tangled and I hated it.

A few years later, I asked her again. Repeat same story; I hated it. I felt clumsy and I was frustrated because it looked so easy but I couldn't do it.

About two years ago, I was looking for something in my mother's house. I don't remember what I was looking for, but I remember what I found: a yarn stash and a couple of incomplete sweaters. It looked interesting.

I've had various hobbies over the years, but nothing seemed to be the perfect hobby. I painted for a while but a. I'm not really good at it and b. what a mess!

Then, I tried candle making. I loved it and it was fun but again, what a mess (and in the kitchen too). It required a lot of planning, time to set everything up, time to make the candles and then, of course, to clean up. I needed at least half a day, maybe even a whole day to actually make something good. It wasn't really worth all the effort, just to make one candle.

What I loved about painting and the candles was playing with colors, mixing them up, using them together. My favorite were the striped candles, with layers of different colors. Looking at my mother's yarn, it occured to me that I could mix yarn colors. And yarn doesn't make a big mess that I would have to clean up either :)

I looked at my mother's knitting books, fell in love with every single thing in Glorious Knits by Kaffe Fassett, decided that this time I was going to learn and I asked my mother again to teach me how to knit.

It was hard at first but I learned how to knit a stitch and I immediately began a garter stitch scarf. The beginning is a mess; holes from yarn overs I never intended to make and the result, a scarf that keeps getting wider. Then, it seems like I got a little better, the scarf evens out after a while. I remember I spent three days knitting that scarf. I did almost nothing else. I was so happy to be knitting and I wanted to knit as fast as I could.

Then I learned how to purl. I knit another scarf. I read patterns and slowly began to understand the abbreviations and the different stitches and I'm still reading patterns and learning new things.

I've also met wonderful friends through Ravelry and then I started this blog and I met more knitters. I'm so happy I learned how to knit! It has given me more than I ever imagined.

Η αρχή - Πώς και πότε ξεκίνησες το πλέξιμο; Ήταν κάτι που υπάρχει για γενιές στην οικογένειά σου ή έμαθες από κάποιο βιβλίο; Τι σε έκανε να πιάσεις τις βελόνες για πρώτη φορά; Μήπως επειδή το πλέξιμο ήταν της μόδας ή επειδή έπλεκε κάποια θεία σου;

  1. Your last paragraph reminded me of how much I get from the knitting community that I take for granted. It wasn't until the last couple of years that I knew many knitters or connected with knitters through the internet.

I'm impressed that you were able to give knitting another chance so many times. I don't think I would have been able to give it a second chance if I hated it the first time.

  2. Ugh I had the exact experience with painting. Knitting is so much cleaner!

  3. I've been reading many of these "starting out" posts, and naturally I started to think how I started out... expect I can't remember! I think my mother taught me the basics, but I don't know when and how, and the rest I learned from school, where it was compulsory to knit socks and mittens. I didn't knit much voluntarily before I started to knit with J.R. I remember knitting some kind of a beret, which non-surprisingly turned out hideous, but that's all.

  4. I also tried candle making before I got into knitting it was fun but it never gave me the oh this is great that I get from knitting. That is the one thing I love about Ravelry is all the people you get to know from all over the world had it not been for Ravelry I wouldn't know half these people.
