It's raining

I'm in Thessaloniki for a few days and the weather has not been the best. Actually, it's been raining every day. I did manage to get some amazing pictures yesterday, but mostly I'm hoping for some sun while I'm here. At least it's good weather for knitting!



Είμαι στη Θεσσαλονίκη για μερικές μέρες και ο καιρός δεν είναι καλός. Συγκεκριμένα, βρέχει κάθε μέρα. Έβγαλα αυτές τις απίστευτες φωτογραφίες χθες, αλλά κυρίως ανυπομονώ να βγάλει και λίγο ήλιο όσο είμαι εδώ. Είναι τουλάχιστον καιρός για πλέξιμο!

IWOG Holiday Bazaar

The International Women's Organization of Greece is a wonderful multicultural organization based in Thessaloniki. Their annual bazaar is always a lot of fun and a great place to buy handmade gifts, jewelry and sweets for the holidays. My friend Angelika is also going to be there with her beautiful handpainted yarn. There will also be lots of music, raffle prizes and food! The money they raise every year from this event helps local charities and many people in need.

It's this Saturday, 3rd December at Ingle Hall, Anatolia College from 12-6. If you're in Thessaloniki, I highly recommend it, it's so much fun!

Το IWOG (Διεθνής Οργάνωση Γυναικών) διοργανώνει και φέτος Χριστουγεννιάτικο bazaar. Η εκδήλωση είναι πάντα πολύ διασκεδαστική και είναι μια ωραία ευκαιρία να αγοράσετε δώρα, κοσμήματα και γλυκά για τις γιορτές. Η φίλη μου η Angelika θα είναι επίσης εκεί, με τα νήματα που βάφει. Θα έχει επίσης πολύ μουσική, δώρα και φαγητό! Τα έσοδα από την εκδήλωση βοηθάνε φιλανθρωπίες της πόλης και οικογένειες που χρειάζονται βοήθεια.

Είναι αυτό το Σάββατο, 3 Δεκεμβρίου στο Ingle Hall, στο Anatolia, από τις 12-6. Αν είσαστε στη Θεσσαλονίκη προτείνω να περάσετε μια βόλτα, θα περάσετε πολύ ωραία!

Craft and biological market in Thessaloniki

I had the most amazing time this morning, my friend Angelika is selling her hand painted yarn and woven scarves at a market here in Thessaloniki. The market looks really interesting, there are people from all over northern Greece selling biological fruit and vegetables and handmade things - jewelry, soap, food, wine and lots more! If you're in Thessaloniki and looking for something fun to do this weekend, it's definitely worth a visit. It's at the Nea Elvetia Park in Harilaou, Friday to Sunday. I'm going again tomorrow, I didn't have time to look at everything today, I admit I couldn't stop looking at Angelika's yarn and planning projects!



Πέρασα πολύ ωραία σήμερα το πρωί, η φίλη μου η Angelika πουλάει τα νήματά της, που τα βάφει στο χέρι καθώς και υφαντά κασκόλ, σε μια εκδήλωση εδώ στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Είναι μια αγορά με βιολογικά λαχανικά και φρούτα και χειροποίητα προϊόντα -κοσμήματα, σαπούνια, φαγητά, κρασιά και πολλά ακόμα! Αν είσαστε στη Θεσσαλονίκη και ψάχνετε κάτι για το σαββατοκύριακο, αξίζει σίγουρα να περάσετε μια βόλτα. Είναι στο πάρκο της Νέας Ελβετίας στη Χαριλάου, από σήμερα Παρασκευή μέχρι και την Κυριακή. Θα πάω ξανά αύριο, δεν είχα πολύ χρόνο σήμερα και ομολογώ ότι δεν μπορούσα να σταματήσω να κοιτάζω τα νήματα της Angelika και να σκέφτομαι τι πλεκτά θα μπορούσα να φτιάξω!

Feels like summer

It was warm and sunny this weekend. After a week of rain, it was great to go out and enjoy the lovely weather. I knit and finished my first red sock. I also worked on my Que Sera cardigan; I have one lace repeat left before the armhole shaping.

I took some pictures of a shawl I blocked, but right now I'm still thinking about the ice cream we had yesterday by the sea!



Ο καιρός ήταν υπέροχος αυτό το σαββατοκύριακο! Μετά από τόσες μέρες με βροχή, βγήκαμε πολύ και απολαύσαμε τον ήλιο. Τελείωσα την πρώτη μου κόκκινη κάλτσα και έπλεξα επίσης το κίτρινο ζακετάκι, το οποίο έχει προχωρήσει αρκετά.

Έχω φωτογραφίες από ένα σάλι, αλλά αυτή τη στιγμή σκέφτομαι το παγωτό που φάγαμε χθες στην παραλία!

Socks, a shawl and the sea

Even though it snowed last week, the weather this weekend was lovely. It was sunny and warm - perfect for coffee and knitting by the sea!



Παρόλο που χιόνισε την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα, ο καιρός το σαββατοκύριακο ήταν υπέροχος. Είχε ήλιο και ζέστη - τέλειος καιρός δηλαδή για καφέ και πλέξιμο στην παραλία!



I worked on my Whippoorwill shawl. This picture is from Friday, I started the stripes yesterday and I'm so excited. It's a great pattern!



Έπλεξα το σάλι Whippoorwill. Η φωτογραφία είναι από την Παρασκευή, ξεκίνησα χθες τις ρίγες και είμαι πολύ ενθουσιασμένη. Είναι υπέροχο σχέδιο!



I wore my Spring Forward socks. They fit perfectly and they're very comfortable. These socks took a long time to knit, but they were worth it. I love them!

I knit 3 repeats of the lace pattern on the leg and six on the foot. The only modification was an idea I got from someone on Ravelry. For the second sock, I started the lace pattern on Row 13 - that way the second sock is a mirror image of the first.



Φόρεσα τις κάλτσες Spring Forward. Το μέγεθος είναι τέλειο και είναι πολύ άνετες. Πήραν πολύ καιρό για να τις πλέξω αλλά άξιζαν τον κόπο. Τις λατρεύω!

Έπλεξα τρεις επαναλήψεις της δαντέλας πριν τη φτέρνα και τρεις επαναλήψεις μετά τη φτέρνα. Η μόνη αλλαγή που έκανα ήταν από μια ιδέα που βρήκα στο Ravelry. Στη δεύτερη κάλτσα ξεκίνησα τη δαντέλα από τη σειρά 13, έτσι οι δύο κάλτσες δεν είναι ίδιες και μου αρέσουν πολύ έτσι.

Clouds

We've been having some lovely thunderstorms. Now, I'm not talking about the weather in a desperate attempt to distract you from the fact that I have cast on yet another knitting project. Well, maybe I am and I admit I did - another Citron. It's such a fun pattern, can you blame me?

Anyway, we've had some lovely loud thunderstorms, with big flashes of lightning and strong winds. For those of us in the city, they are a welcome relief from the high temperatures we had last week. Excellent weather for knitting too - I love storms in the summer. For those who wanted to go to the beach on the weekend, maybe not so welcome.

On Friday we had a big storm. It started in the afternoon and it just poured down rain. In the evening, just as the sun was setting, I saw this amazing sky...



Αυτές τις ημέρες είχαμε μερικές υπέροχες καταιγίδες. Ακούστε με, γιατί δεν μιλάω για τον καιρό μόνο και μόνο για να σας αποσπάσω την προσοχή από το γεγονός ότι ξεκίνησα ένα ακόμα πλεκτό. Ίσως το κάνω και για αυτό και παραδέχομαι ότι ναι, έχω ένα καινούριο πλεκτό. Το δεύτερό μου Citron, είναι τόσο όμορφο σχέδιο όμως, πώς να αντισταθώ;

Είχαμε υπέροχες δυνατές καταιγίδες λοιπόν, με αστραπές και δυνατούς ανέμους. Για όσους μείναμε στην πόλη, ήταν ένα ευχάριστο διάλειμμα από τη ζέστη που είχαμε την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα. Είναι και τέλειος καιρός για πλέξιμο. Για όσους ήθελαν να πάνε στην παραλία, ίσως δεν το εκτίμησαν και τόσο.

Την Παρασκευή είχαμε μια μεγάλη καταιγίδα. Ξεκίνησε το απόγευμα και έβρεξε πάρα πολύ. Αργότερα, την ώρα που έδυε ο ήλιος, είδα αυτό το υπέροχο θέαμα.



An online search gave me their name. The are called Mammatus Clouds and they usually form after a storm. I think they look amazing. They didn't last very long, they started dissolving about five to ten minutes after I first saw them.


Μια αναζήτηση στο διαδίκτυο μου έδωσε το όνομά τους. Λέγονται σύννεφα Mammatus και συνήθως σχηματίζονται μετά από μια καταιγίδα. Νομίζω ότι είναι απίστευτα. Δεν κράτησαν πολύ, πέντε δέκα λεπτά αφού τα είδα, άρχισαν να διαλύονται.



Fascinated, I looked at other types of clouds. There are clouds that look like waves (cirrus Kelvin-Helmholtz). The link is to the Cloud Appreciation Society and I recommend browsing their site, they have some amazing pictures.

Next time the sky is cloudy, take a closer look. You might see something amazing!


Εντυπωσιασμένη, κοίταξα να βρω περισσότερα σύννεφα. Υπάρχουν σύννεφα που μοιάζουν με κύματα (cirrus Kelvin-Helmholtz). Ο σύνδεσμος οδηγεί σε ένα σύλλογο, αφιερωμένο στα σύννεφα. Συνιστώ να χαζέψετε λίγο την ιστοσελίδα, έχουν απίστευτες φωτογραφίες.

Την επόμενη φορά που έχει συννεφιά, κοιτάξτε λίγο καλύτερα. Μπορεί να δείτε κάτι φανταστικό!

Greek coffee and estonian yarn

Hi! I hope you are all having a great week with lots of wonderful knitting time!

I have some great pictures that I've wanted to show you for almost two weeks now, but I've just been so busy.

I went out with my friend L. for a coffee and we went to a place we've found that is absolutely perfect: it's nice, quiet, has a great view of the sea and it's knitter friendly too! It's right next to Aristotelous square, which is probably one of the most well known streets in Thessaloniki. We love it!


Γεια σας! Ελπίζω να περνάτε μια υπέροχη εβδομάδα και να έχετε μπόλικο χρόνο για το πλέξιμο!

Έχω μερικές τέλειες φωτογραφίες που θέλω εδώ και δυο βδομάδες να σας δείξω, αλλά έτρεχα πολύ με δουλειές.

Είχα πάει για καφέ με την φίλη μου την Λ. σε ένα πολύ ωραίο μαγαζί που έχουμε ανακαλύψει και το οποίο είναι τέλειο: όμορφο, ήσυχο, έχει τέλεια θέα τη θάλασσα και είναι φιλικό για πλέκτριες. Είναι στην πλατεία Αριστοτέλους και μας αρέσει πάρα πολύ!


What, you might be wondering, is the "greek" coffee from the title? The wonderful frappé of course! Not only is it a greek invention, it was made for the first time in Thessaloniki, at the 1957 International Trade Fair. How could we drink anything else?


Speaking of the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair, it takes place here every year in September. It just ended on Sunday and finally the city is back to normal. There's always so much traffic during the Fair. I remember when I was little, my parents would take me and it was always so exciting. They had many things for children and going really was a family event. It's more businesslike now, more serious but still very interesting and definitely worth a visit.


Και φυσικά ήπιαμε φραπέ, που δημιουργήθηκε στην Θεσσαλονίκη, στην Διεθνή Έκθεση το 1957.

Ευτυχώς που η Έκθεση τελείωσε για φέτος, επειδή πάντα έχει πάρα πολύ κίνηση στο κέντρο της πόλης. Θυμάμαι όταν ήμουν μικρή, με πήγαιναν οι γονείς μου και ήταν πάντα τόσο συναρπαστικό. Είχαν πολλά πράγματα για τα παιδιά και ήταν μια δραστηριότητα για όλη την οικογένεια. Τώρα νομίζω ότι είναι πιο εμπορική, πιο σοβαρή αλλά παραμένει ενδιαφέρουσα και αξίζει να την επισκεφτείτε.


Anyway, back to drinking ice cold coffee, looking at the sea and yarn! L. recently went to Estonia and she brought me this amazing yarn. From Estonia, made from estonian sheep! I don't why this is so exciting for me but I hope you can understand!


Επιστρέφω στον καφέ και στο πλέξιμο. Η Λ. πήγε πρόσφατα στην Εσθονία και μου έφερε αυτό το εκπληκτικό νήμα. Από την Εσθονία, από εσθονικά πρόβατα! Δεν ξέρω γιατί ακριβώς ενθουσιάζομαι τόσο με αυτό το γεγονός αλλά ελπίζω ότι θα με καταλάβετε!


And it's so pretty! I love pink and this has every shade of pink you can imagine in it! It's perfect! The colors were hard to capture, it really is even prettier than it looks!

290 gr of wool The weight is something between a fingering and a sport weight, it's actually kind of how I imagine shetland wool is.


Και είναι τόσο όμορφο! Τρελαίνομαι για ροζ και έχει πραγματικά όλες τις αποχρώσεις του ροζ που μπορείς να φανταστείς! Είναι τέλειο! Τα χρώματα ήταν δύσκολο να τα φωτογραφίσω ακριβώς και από κοντά είναι πραγματικά ακόμα πιο όμορφο!

290 γραμμάρια και είναι ολόμαλλο. Είναι αρκετά λεπτό, βασικά είναι όπως φαντάζομαι ότι είναι το shetland.

Lunch by the sea

I went out for lunch on Sunday with a friend. We drove to a village just outside the city, which has restaurants and coffee shops by the sea. The place we chose had wonderful food, and all the tables were on the beach, right next to the water.



The weather has not been the best recently, it has been raining almost every day. On Sunday it was sunny in the morning, but got cloudy later on, which is why we decided not to go swimming. It didn't rain and we enjoyed the cool breeze. We had a wonderful time!


Την Κυριακή το μεσημέρι πήγα για φαγητό με μια φίλη μου, λίγο έξω από την πόλη, στην Περαία. Έχει ταβερνούλες και καφετέριες στην παραλία. Η ταβέρνα που διαλέξαμε είχε τέλειο φαγητό και όλα τα τραπέζια ήταν στην άμμο, δίπλα στο κύμα.

Ο καιρός τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες δεν είναι πολύ καλός, σχεδόν κάθε μέρα βρέχει, έστω και για λίγο. Eίχε ήλιο το πρωί αλλά μετά συννέφιασε, γι'αυτό και δεν πήγαμε για μπάνιο. Τελικά δεν έβρεξε και το αεράκι ήταν πολύ δροσερό. Περάσαμε τέλεια!

An interesting evening

I finished the paper today and I am so happy! Now I can focus on the other one and studying for the exams... So, with the excuse "I'm finished with one of my four classes and I'm tired and I want something pretty", I went to the yarn store. I'll post pictures tomorrow, I got some beautiful yarn for a project I'm really excited about!

Yes, another new project. Actually, two. I bought the magazine, I bought the yarn, I bought new needles - just to be sure that I can start at once. I blame the stress of all the papers and exams and all the studying. It makes me weak and I just can't resist the temptation.

Coming home, I got stuck in traffic because there was a naked bicycle protest downtown. Let me repeat that: a naked bicycle protest. I didn't get quite what they were protesting about, but given that trying to ride a bicycle in this city is insane because there is almost no place to actually ride it, that's probably it. Before you ask, no, I don't have pictures. It was tempting, but this is a knitting blog! Most of the women were in bathing suits, some people were dressed but some were actually completely naked! Everyone in the street seemed quite excited about it. The drivers stuck in the traffic weren't too happy though.

Waiting for the road to open up again, I noticed that I was right next to the White Tower. It's the symbol of the city and it's really pretty, so I took a picture of it for you!



Ένα ενδιαφέρον απόγευμα

Έδωσα τη μια εργασία σήμερα και είμαι πολύ χαρούμενη! Τώρα μπορώ να συγκεντρωθώ στην άλλη εργασία και στο διάβασμα για την εξεταστική... Έτσι, με την δικαιολογία ότι "τέλειωσα με το ένα από τα τέσσερα μαθήματα και είμαι κουρασμένη και θέλω να πάρω κάτι όμορφο", πήγα και αγόρασα νήμα! Θα σας δείξω φωτογραφίες αύριο, πήρα υπέροχα νήματα για μερικά πράγματα που θέλω να φτιάξω.

Ναι, καινούριο πλεκτό. Βασικά, δύο. Αγόρασα το περιοδικό, αγόρασα τα νήματα, αγόρασα και βελόνες - για να είμαι σίγουρη ότι μπορώ να ξεκινήσω αμέσως. Το άγχος φταίει για τις εργασίες και το διάβασμα και την εξεταστική! Είμαι σίγουρη! Είμαι κουρασμένη και δεν μπόρεσα να αντισταθώ.

Γυρνώντας σπίτι, κόλλησα στην κίνηση επειδή είχε πορεία γυμνών ποδηλατών. Να το πω άλλη μια φορά: γυμνοί ποδηλάτες στο κέντρο της πόλης! Δεν κατάλαβα ακριβώς για ποιο λόγο γινόταν η πορεία, αλλά με δεδομένο ότι για να σκεφτείς να κάνεις ποδήλατο σε αυτή την πόλη μάλλον τρελός θα είσαι, γιατί εκτός από την παραλία δεν έχει πουθενά... Ε! μάλλον αυτό ήταν! Πριν με ρωτήσετε, όχι, δεν έβγαλα φωτογραφίες! Ήταν δελεαστικό ομολογώ, αλλά αυτό το μπλογκ είναι για κυρίως για πλέξιμο, οπότε δεν μου ταίριαζε! Οι περισσότερες γυναίκες στην πορεία φορούσαν μαγιώ, μερικοί φορούσαν ρούχα αλλά υπήρχαν και κάποιοι τελείως γυμνοί! Οι περαστικοί το χάρηκαν ιδιαίτερα, οι οδηγοί όχι τόσο γιατί είχε κλείσει όλος ο δρόμος.

Περιμένοντας στην κίνηση, πρόσεξα ότι ήμουν ακριβώς δίπλα στο Λευκό Πύργο! Σας έβγαλα λοιπόν μια φωτογραφία να απολαύσετε και εσείς την όμορφη Θεσσαλονίκη!
