Color Lovers - 3KCBWDAY1

Today is the first day of the third Knitting and Crochet Blog Week! This event is so exciting and inspiring, I'm really looking forward to reading everyone's posts and discovering some great new blogs too! The first topic is all about color....

Colour is one of our greatest expressions of ourselves when we choose to knit or crochet, so how do you choose what colours you buy and crochet or knit with. Have a look through your stash and see if there is a predominance of one colour. Do the same with your finished projects - do they match? Do you love a rainbow of bright hues, or more subdued tones. How much attention do you pay to the original colour that a garment is knit in when you see a pattern? Tell readers about your love or confusion over colour.

When I first started knitting, I just bought any yarn that I liked, without thinking about whether it would look good knit up or if it would go with anything I wear. One of the problems I have with knitting is that I can't always see the yarn and the finished project as one thing. For anyone who doesn't knit, I'm pretty sure this sounds like I'm crazy. You buy yarn, you knit with it, your yarn becomes something else. So simple. But for all of you who do knit, you know it's never that simple. Over the past months I've noticed a few things that really made me think about the colors I use in my knitting and the yarn I choose to work with.

I recently bought three skeins of a beautiful yarn. I was so happy I found it, because I had wanted it for so long. It's a fantastic color combination, a mix of pink, orange and red that will be perfect for a summer cardigan. Looking through my stash, I realized that sometime in the past, I had already bought that exact same yarn. Three skeins. So now I have six. It's always good to have extra yarn and I love this color so much that I will love having two things made out of it. However this is not the only time this has happened.

According to my stash, I love pink. Fuschia, watermelon, peachy pink, light pink and dark pink - I have it all. Now, I do like pink a lot and I frequently wear something pink. But not all the time. Here's that problem with the yarn vs. actually wearing something. I like to have one (or two) pink cardigans. I do not need the ten (or more) waiting for me in my stash.

I also don't need four green shawls or so much navy blue. I certainly don't need two shawls in exactly the same yellow color. Yes, I did it again. I really like that yellow, just like I really liked that pink yarn for the cardigan.

Buying exactly the same thing over and over again leads to a huge stash that feels small, because everything is the same. I realized that I also tend to buy clothes only in certain colors and I've been having the same problem there too - lots of clothes but it feels like I have nothing to wear. I'm trying to fix this problem I have, by looking at what I want to wear and then choosing the yarn and lately I've been surprised by my choices. I've found yarn that I never would have bought before and now I'd love a sweater in that color.

Trying to see the project in the yarn has really helped me with my color choices. There are colors I like to look at (and knit with) that I don't wear so much. There are colors I like to wear that I don't enjoy knitting. White and beige are boring while dark brown and black are just too dark for me to knit with them comfortably.

And then there's also the stitch pattern factor. Dark colors and variegated yarn hide lace patterns and cables. Why go to all that trouble if you can't see all your hard work? On the other hand, I do love stripes and choosing colors to mix is always a lot of fun!

Color in my knitting has become a complex equation:

Yarn for a cardigan = colors I like - colors in stash - colors available to wear already + easy to knit with - boring + show off stitch pattern - too dark

If I get too confused and can't decide, I've found that socks look good in any color! And that might explain why I have so many of them on the needles...

  3. You've got some beautiful yarns! I had to laugh when you said you'd bought some yarns twice over! It must mean that you really like that colourway! And I have to agree, socks look good whatever the colour! It's a good way to try out new colours to see if you really like them!

  4. The yarns you posted are divine. No wonder you fell in love with them. If you have "repeated" yarn, may be you can consider making a scarf, hat or shawl as a gift, for a special person.
Great to fond you @ Blog week,

  5. We are such creatures of habit, aren't we? I, too, went through a phase when I would bring home new yarn only to discover that I already had skeins of the same color (and sometimes the exact same company)!

  7. Goodness, you have such beautiful taste in yarn. I especially love the yarn in the first photo. I also have a hard time incorporating colors that I love to knit with into garments that I would actually wear. That is probably why I have been making a lot of accessories lately and things for the home.

  9. I love your post. Beautiful photos. And I think it is funny that you bought the same yarn twice. I would definitely do that, too! I find that the colors of yarn I want to buy and knit are not necessarily the colors I want to wear. I'm working to find a middle ground.
