The last time we went to Athens, we didn't go to the museum, so we really wanted to go this time. I'd been to the old museum a couple times with my parents when I was little and while the old museum had the advantage of being on the Acropolis, it was quite small. The new museum is at the beginning of the hill and has a great view of the Acropolis.
Having heard so much about the actual building, I was a little disappointed when we first saw it. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but I admit I was expecting something more impressive. However, walking towards it, we saw the first of many wonderful surprises. The path to the entrance is actually a platform made of a clear material with ruins underneath. Very exciting! Just outside the entrance, the platform opens up, revealing some of the ruins underneath. Overlooking the ruins is a marble owl, the symbol of the goddess Athena, who gave her name to the city. According to Greek mythology, Athena and Poseidon both wanted to claim the city. Poseidon offered the water from the sea and Athena offered the olive tree. The citizens chose Athena.
These pictures outside are the last ones I took until we got to the third floor terrace; pictures were not allowed in the museum. The tickets are very cheap; if I lived in Athens, I would definitely visit the museum often, it's very peaceful and relaxing inside.
Την τελευταία φορά που πήγαμε στην Αθήνα, δεν πήγαμε στο καινούριο μουσείο της Ακρόπολης και θέλαμε πολύ να πάμε αυτή τη φορά. Είχα πάει στο παλιό μουσείο μερικές φορές με τους γονείς μου όταν ήμουν μικρή και ενώ είχε το πλεονέκτημα ότι ήταν πάνω στην Ακρόπολη, ήταν αρκετά μικρό. Το καινούριο μουσείο βρίσκεται στην αρχή του λόφου και έχει πολύ ωραία θέα στην Ακρόπολη.
Έχοντας ακούσει αρκετά για το καινούριο κτίριο, ομολογώ ότι απογοητεύτηκα λίγο όταν το είδα. Όχι ότι είχε κάτι συγκεκριμένο που δεν μου άρεσε, απλά περίμενα κάτι πιο εντυπωσιακό. Όμως, πηγαίνοντας προς το κτίριο, είδαμε την πρώτη από πολλές ευχάριστες εκπλήξεις. Η είσοδος του μουσείου είναι μια διάφανη πλατφόρμα με αρχαία από κάτω. Λίγο πριν την είσοδο, υπάρχει ένα μεγάλο άνοιγμα, όπου μπορούν οι επισκέπτες να δουν τα αρχαία. Πάνω από τα αρχαία, υπάρχει μια μαρμάρινη κουκουβάγια, το σύμβολο της Αθηνάς.
Αυτές είναι οι τελευταίες φωτογραφίες που έβγαλα μέχρι που βγήκαμε στο μπαλκόνι του τρίτου ορόφου, καθώς απαγορεύονται οι φωτογραφίες μέσα στο μουσείο. Τα εισιτήρια είναι πολύ φθηνά, αν έμενα στην Αθήνα θα πήγαινα συχνά, είναι πολύ χαλαρωτικό και ήρεμο το μουσείο μέσα.
The exhibits cover three floors and are placed according to the location of where everything was originally found. The first floor has household items that were found around the Acropolis hill and bronze items, the second floor has statues and the third floor has the Parthenon marbles.
The big statues are certainly beautiful and impressive, but I found myself equally drawn to the small items that people used every day. The attention to detail is amazing. My favorites were a collection sewing needles made out of bone, a miniature mirror that was only about 2-3 inches long and various little pots that were painted with geometric patterns.
While I prefer the marble and stone pieces, I must admit that the small bronze items had incredible details and I can't imagine how much work went into creating them.
The second floor has marble statues, displayed in the open for the first time. It's a wonderful experience to walk around them and see them from every angle. I especially loved the statue of a horse, again the details are incredible. I also enjoyed a display of the different kinds of marble used, from many parts of Greece, with information about each one. Another interesting display contained samples of various stones that were used for color. The powdered stone was mixed with wax and used to paint the marble.
Another wonderful feature was the Caryatids display. These statues of women decorated the Erechtheion on the Acropolis. Instead of removing them from the museum to clean them, the archaeologists have developed a unique technique using laser technology in collaboration with a university in Crete. A box is placed over the statue they want to clean and the work being done is shown on a screen. We could actually see how they clean the statues and it was very cool.
The third floor contains the marbles that decorated the Parthenon. They are placed on a rectangular structure the size of the Parthenon and in their correct position. You can see
an amazing picture of the display on the museum website. There are also copies of the pieces that are located in other museums. I really believe that anyone who sees this display will be convinced that the rest of the marbles should be returned to Greece. After decades of repeated requests by the Greek government, this museum and it's fantastic display of these pieces is the most compelling argument that the marbles should be returned to Greece, where they belong.
Finally, the third floor also has an area that shows a video about the Parthenon through the ages and describes the parade depicted in the marbles. The Parthenon history section of the video was created by Costa Gavras and was originally censored. I'm so pleased they're showing part of it now. You can
watch the full original video here (the link is for the English version). It's a lovely and accurate summary of the Parthenon's history and it's very moving. It also features the wonderful poem by Lord Byron, "The Curse of Minerva". It's definitely worth watching.
The third floor also has a lovely coffee shop and restaurant with traditional Greek recipes. We sat outside and enjoyed a light lunch as well as a lovely view of the Acropolis.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I'm so glad we went. The building itself is very modern and minimal. The almost bare interior is the perfect way to show off these magnificent ancient masterpieces. The only disappointment was the gift shop. While the museum has two shops, there were very few things I wanted to buy, even though I really wanted to bring back a few gifts for my friends. The first shop has a lovely selection of books, but most of them were quite big and heavy and since we had planned to be out all day, they were not something I wanted to carry all around Athens until the evening. However, they did also have a nice selection of children's books and if I had wanted to get some, they would certainly not have been a problem as they were much smaller. The second shop has jewelry and other small items, but the only thing I liked were the mugs. I got one for my mother with some very cute owls on it. Even so, this is definitely the best museum in Greece by far and one of the best I've ever been to.
If you're planning on visiting Athens, you should definitely go, it's a wonderful experience. In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this little tour of the museum!
Τα εκθέματα καλύπτουν τρεις ορόφους και ακολουθούν τη διάταξη στην οποία βρέθηκαν. Στον πρώτο όροφο υπάρχουν διάφορα αντικείμενα που βρέθηκαν σε σπίτια στο λόφο της Ακρόπολης και χάλκινα αντικείμενα. Ο δεύτερος όροφος έχει αγάλματα και ο τρίτος έχει τα μάρμαρα του Παρθενώνα.
Τα μεγάλα αγάλματα είναι σίγουρα όμορφα και εντυπωσιακά, αλλά μου τράβηξαν εξίσου την προσοχή και τα μικρά, καθημερινά αντικείμενα. Είναι εκπληκτική η λεπτομέρεια που έχουν. Τα αγαπημένα μου ήταν μια συλλογή από βελόνες για ράψιμο φτιαγμένες από κόκκαλο, ένας καθρέφτης μινιατούρα που είχε μήκος το πολύ δέκα εκατοστά και διάφορα μικρά δοχεία βαμμένα με γεωμετρικά σχέδια.
Γενικά προτιμώ τα κομμάτια από μάρμαρο και πέτρα, αλλά παραδέχομαι ότι τα μεταλλικά αντικείμενα έχουν απίστευτη λεπτομέρεια και δεν μπορώ να φανταστώ πόσο δουλειά είχαν.
Ο δεύτερος όροφος έχει μαρμάρινα αγάλματα που εκτίθενται ανοιχτά για πρώτη φορά. Είναι πραγματικά υπέροχη εμπειρία να περπατάς γύρω από τα αγάλματα και να τα βλέπεις από κάθε γωνία. Μου άρεσε πολύ ένα άγαλμα αλόγου, η λεπτόμερεια και πάλι είναι φανταστική. Μου άρεσε επίσης μια παρουσίαση από τα διάφορα είδη από μάρμαρο που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν, από διάφορα μέρη της χώρας, με πληροφορίες για το καθένα. Μια ακόμα ενδιαφέρουσα παρουσίαση ήταν δείγματα από διάφορες χρωματιστές πέτρες που χρησιμοποιούσαν για να φτιάχνουν βαφές. Αφού έκαναν σκόνη την πέτρα, την ανακάτευαν με κερί και έβαφαν το μάρμαρο.
Ένα ακόμα υπέροχο έκθεμα ήταν οι Καρυάτιδες. Αντί να τις βγάζουν από το μουσείο για να τις καθαρίσουν, ανέπτυξαν σε συνεργασία με το πανεπιστήμιο στην Κρήτη μια τεχνική καθαρισμού με λέιζερ. Τοποθετούν ένα κουτί γύρω από το άγαλμα που θέλουν να καθαρίσουν και η δουλειά αυτή που γίνεται προβάλλεται σε οθόνη. Μπορούσαμε να δούμε πώς ακριβώς καθαρίζουν τα αγάλματα και ήταν φανταστικό.
Ο τρίτος όροφος έχει τα μάρμαρα του Παρθενώνα. Είναι τοποθετημένα σε μια ορθογώνια κατασκευή στο μέγεθος του Παρθενώνα και στην σωστή τους θέση.
Μπορείτε να δείτε μια απίθανη φωτογραφία στην ιστοσελίδα του μουσείου. Υπάρχουν επίσης αντίγραφα των κομματιών που βρίσκονται σε άλλα μουσεία. Πραγματικά πιστεύω ότι όποιος δει αυτή την υπέροχη παρουσίαση θα πειστεί ότι τα μάρμαρα πρέπει να επιστραφούν στην Ελλάδα. Μετά από παρακλήσεις τόσα χρόνια από την Ελλάδα, το καινούριο μουσείο και η πανέμορφη αυτή παρουσίαση είναι το καλύτερο επιχείρημα ότι τα μάρμαρα πρέπει να επιστρέψουν στην Ελλάδα, όπου ανήκουν.
Τέλος, ο τρίτος όροφος έχει επίσης μια αίθουσα όπου προβάλλεται βίντεο για την ιστορία του Παρθενώνα και τις παραστάσεις που απεικονίζονται στα μάρμαρα. Το κομμάτι για την ιστορία του Παρθενώνα είναι του Κώστα Γαβρά και όταν βγήκε λογοκρίθηκε. Χαίρομαι πολύ που τώρα το δείχνουν ένα τμήμα του.
Μπορείτε να το δείτε εδώ. Είναι μια υπέροχη και ακριβής σύνοψη της ιστορίας του Παρθενώνα και είναι πολύ συγκινητικό. Συνοδεύεται επίσης από το πολύ ωραίο ποιήμα του Λόρδου Βύρωνα, "Η κατάρα της Αθηνάς". Αξίζει πραγματικά να το δείτε.
Ο τρίτος όροφος έχει επίσης μια υπέροχη καφετέρια και εστιατόριο με παραδοσιακά ελληνικά φαγητά. Το κτίριο γενικά είναι πολύ μοντέρνο και λιτό. Το πολύ απλό εσωτερικό του κτιρίου είναι ο καλύτερος τρόπος να αναδειχθούν αυτά τα υπέροχα αρχαία αριστουργήματα. Η μόνη απογοήτευση ήταν το κατάστημα με τα αναμνηστικά είδη. Παρόλο που το μουσείο έχει δύο καταστήματα, υπήρχαν πολύ λίγα πράγματα που θα αγόραζα, αν και ήθελα να πάρω μερικά πράγματα για τις φίλες μου. Το πρώτο μαγαζί έχει μια υπέροχη συλλογή από βιβλία, τα οποία όμως ήταν μεγάλα και βαριά. Με δεδομένο ότι είχαμε κανονίσει να είμαστε έξω όλη μέρα, δεν ήταν κάτι που ήθελα να κουβαλάω στην Αθήνα μέχρι το βράδυ. Είχαν όμως και μεγάλη συλλογή από παιδικά βιβλία και αν ήθελα να πάρω, σίγουρα με αυτά δεν θα υπήρχε πρόβλημα. Το άλλο μαγαζί είχε κοσμήματα και μερικά μικρότερα είδη, αλλά το μόνο που μου άρεσε ήταν οι κούπες. Πήρα μια για τη μητέρα μου που έχει μερικές χαριτωμένες κουκουβάγιες επάνω. Ακόμα και έτσι όμως, είναι σίγουρα με μεγάλη διαφορά το καλύτερο μουσείο στην Ελλάδα και ένα από τα καλύτερα που έχω επισκεφθεί.
Αν σχεδιάζετε να πάτε στην Αθήνα, να κανονίσετε οπωσδήποτε και μια επίσκεψη στο μουσείο, είναι υπέροχη εμπειρία. Εν τω μεταξύ, ελπίζω να απολαύσατε αυτή τη μικρή ξενάγηση!
