Socks and some thoughts about knitting

My new socks are coming along very well, the first pair is in the process of getting it's toes. As was sitting there, though, knitting a pair of wool socks in May, I started thinking. The weather is getting increasingly warmer and I've been doing some spring cleaning. This includes, of course, putting away the winter clothes and getting out the summer ones. I'm going to finish these socks (and all the other ones I have started) and then I'm going to put them away for the summer. I want to wear them now and admire them, but I can't.

I've also been thinking about my stash. Spring cleaning makes me want to get rid of stuff, make room, find a place for everything, etc. I have a lot of yarn and I keep trying to not buy so much; it's hard though when there are so many beautiful colors and soft fibers to choose from. Something else occured to me while I was knitting today - and I'm beginning to realize that maybe I shouldn't do too much thinking while I'm knitting - even if I don't buy any more yarn and knit all the yarn I have... Well, it doesn't solve the problem of all the space the yarn takes up. The finished projects will (mostly) be things for me.

So, really, knitting the yarn doesn't get rid of it. It's not like reading a few books, then giving them to a friend, making room for new books in my bookshelf. I'm just turning the yarn into something else, but whatever I make, I usually want to keep it!

When I started knitting, I was curious about all the knitters who constantly make things for other people. Sure, I love making gifts for my friends, but I also love making things for myself. Now, I'm wondering if those knitters simply reached a limit in the amount of handknit things they need, but they still enjoy knitting, so now they make things and give them away.

I also suspect that this is one reason why lots of knitters eventually start knitting complex lace patterns in yarn so thin, that it really should be called a thread. Weeks (possibly months) spent on their favorite hobby and the finished project takes up less room that a pair of socks.

socks

I've been wondering about these things, because I think I'm getting better at knitting. I'm not knitting more than I used to, same time spent on average every day, but I'm making less mistakes. When I first started knitting, I knit and then I ripped back and then I knit again. Each little project took two or three times the time it would take me now. I'm very happy that I'm becoming a better knitter, but you can see my concern. This hobby that I love so much, the better I get, the more things it creates. Which is obvious, because I'm making stuff. I just don't know where I'm going to put them :)

While I enjoy learning new things in knitting, I love it more when I'm doing it well and I absolutely love making things that I can wear and use. For me, knitting is fun, but I do always have a goal in my mind: make something that fits and then, wear it.

I know that in the beginning the things I make will slowly replace items that I bought. Every beautiful new pair of socks I knit will replace an old, worn out pair, bought from a store. And I know that in time, even handknits wear out and will have to be replaced. Eventually though, I think that I will end up with more things than I need or have room for.

socks

yarn

[my next socks - οι επόμενες κάλτσες]

What do you think is the best solution?

Spinning and dyeing the yarn?
Give the projects away?
Knit heirloom shawls with cobweb yarn?
Cover every bed, couch and armchair with blankets made out of sock yarn?
Have children, knit for them and when they inevitably grow out of things, give the handknit items away?
Knit rugs?
Move to a bigger house? ;)

And the biggest question of all: How many socks does one person really need?

yarn

Ποια νομίζετε ότι είναι η λύση;

Να φτιάχνω και να βάφω τα νήματα που χρησιμοποιώ;
Όλα τα πλεκτά να είναι δώρα;
Έσαρπες με δαντέλα από πολύ λεπτό νήμα;
Κουβέρτες πλεγμένες με νήμα για κάλτσες που θα καλύπτουν κάθε κρεβάτι, καναπέ και πολυθρόνα;
Να κάνω παιδιά, να πλέκω πράγματα για αυτά και όταν πια δεν τους κάνουν, τότε να χαρίσω τα πλεκτά;
Πλέξιμο χαλιών;
Μεγαλύτερο σπίτι;

Και η πιο σημαντική ερώτηση από όλες: Πόσες κάλτσες χρειάζεται πραγματικά ένας άνθρωπος;

  1. According to my husband five pairs of handknit socks is quite enough. Hah! I told him to bugger off.

  2. Haha, yeah that is a dilemma! I opt for a bigger house for now, and all of the above mentioned too. :o)
    You'll need many pairs of socks.

  4. You can NEVER have too many pairs of socks.

    Fact :)

    And they do wear out and need replacing.

    If you begin to feel you're knitting faster than things are wearing out I suggest a few 4 ply cardigans. They take ages.

  5. I do think that socks are something that you can a ton of and it never gets old. I mean, you will always need a new pair! Also, I do think that there is ALWAYS someone to knit for! If not yourself, then a friend, a coworker, a mom, a dad, a husband, a new baby, a... well, you get the picture. I love to knit and though my yarn takes up space, it makes me happy, so I try to not to get too worked up over it! ;)

  6. I agree with photoknitdog. You can always find someone to give a nice pair of socks to. Still, there a limit to the number of knits I want to store, so I think gifting is a good solution.

  7. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and...
    as many pairs as it takes to cover all the possible color combinations. And since that seems like an infinite number, just keep going!

  8. Hey Alex,

    You need socks. You knit socks.
    You knit as many socks as you need and as you want.
    No problem as long as you don't feel guilty about the stash.
    If you have leftovers from your socks and keep them, you can knit a blanket out of them.

    Happy knitting,
    Philhellene

    ps your socks are gorgeous, well done! the weather here is still quite cold, I still wear my handknit socks... maybe consider moving to a colder climate?
    ;-)

  9. I'm voting for the bigger house ...

    There's a lot of charities out there you can donate hand-knits to.

  10. Teehee! I know what it's like: I only just now realised that I have more than enough yarn to keep going for the next two years. Which doesn't stop me from getting more... Oh dear!
    Keep going: You 'need' all the items you make! Definitely. And if you feel you don't want to wear every single item yourself: start a gifts box - stash everything that will make a nice present then you will have something ready whenver an occasion comes up! You could make a few baby things, they're always good giveaways.

  13. well, I'd say that if you start knitting for others (friends, family, charity) you'll have no shortage of people to knit for. You could also just move on to bigger projects which take more time and thus your production will decrease significantly. Start a bed-sized blanket with squares made from your left over sock yarn and that will keep you knitting for ages!

  14. What I usually do is knitting for others (friends mostly). Anyway, my house always looks like a yarn-shop. For the time being I use my bedroom like a storage room....
