Socks with stripes // Κάλτσες με ρίγες

These socks for my father were long overdue; he had requested a pair last winter and I never got around to knitting them. So this year I promised that I would knit him a pair of wool socks and these are indeed thick and super warm!

wool socks with stripes

I used sport and DK weight yarns and made the stripes myself - no self-striping yarn for this project! I was originally just going to use the medium blue (the color on the heel and toe) but I completely miscalculated how much I would need when I was buying it in Thessaloniki. Once we got back to Larissa I realized my mistake and decided to use leftovers to make up the amount of yarn that was missing. I think they turned out better like this and they were a lot of fun to knit!

The pattern is my own, I've used it a few times now and I'll write it down at some time. These were a completely custom fit, I actually measured my father's feet because he didn't want them to be to tight but not so loose that they would fall down either.

I'm happy to report that the fit is indeed almost perfect, just a tiny bit tight on the top part of the foot, where the heel section is. Not too tight, just a tiny bit tighter than perfect. I find that that's where lots of socks are tight and I always make the heel really long to fix that. It's not that he won't wear them, just that for the next pair I'll do 2-3 rows more for the heel.

wool socks with stripes

wool socks with stripes

The yarn is all from my favorite yarn store, Noulikas in Thessaloniki. I really miss shopping there, now that I've moved and I try to visit them every time I go to Thessaloniki.

Skoufaki - new free pattern!

I'm in the middle of some serious holiday gift knitting and once I realized I would be knitting some hats, I thought, why not write up a pattern too?

Skoufaki - free knitting pattern for baby / child hat by Alexandra Nycha

Skoufaki - free knitting pattern for baby / child hat by Alexandra Nycha

Skoufaki means little hat in Greek. These beanies are so quick and addictive to knit! I'm already looking at my stash, thinking about stripes and color combinations. It's always so much fun to knit for babies - yay for one day projects!

Skoufaki - free knitting pattern for baby / child hat by Alexandra Nycha

Skoufaki - free knitting pattern for baby / child hat by Alexandra Nycha

The pattern has eight (!) sizes, from newborn to 12 years old. I'm also working on the adult version, to be published soon.

You can download the pattern from Ravelry here: download now. I hope you like it!

Pexnidi - new pattern

Another one! These are patterns that I've been working on for months, having knit the samples and I finally found the time to work on the written instructions, translating everything etc.

Pexnidi scarf

Pexnidi scarf

Pexnidi is a children's scarf with stripes (what else?) and an interesting texture. The pattern includes three sizes: 4-6 years, 6-8 years and 8+ years.

It's designed to use up leftovers and I've included detailed calculations of yarn requirements for each section, for every size. The pattern is easy, perfect for beginners, but interesting too so you won't get bored.

Pexnidi scarf

Pexnidi scarf

Pexnidi means game or toy in Greek and I know you'll have fun knitting this cute scarf! You can buy it here on Ravelry. Grab your stash of DK yarns play with stripes!

Pexnidi scarf

Tetragon scarf - new pattern

I'm so excited to share this new pattern with you. I've been working on it for months and now finally I can show you!

Tetragon scarf

Tetragon is a one skein project, designed to make the most of a pretty sock yarn. It's name means "four angles" and it also means square in Greek. The shape however looks more like a triangle, but with something extra to make it interesting.

Tetragon scarf

Tetragon scarf

Tetragon scarf

Stripes, garter stitch and easy to knit - it's just the kind of project I'm always looking for. The finished scarf is very practical, long enough to stay on and full in the center to keep you warm.

Tetragon scarf

A big thank you to my dear friend Giota for modelling the scarf!

I knit two versions of Tetragon and the pattern includes them both. The original pattern I designed has a nupp edging which I adore. Afterwards, I created the simple edges version, for a unisex scarf with a minimal look.

Tetragon scarf

Tetragon scarf

Tetragon scarf

What I love most about Tetragon is the changing stripe effect, created by the unusual shape. I know I'll be knitting more of these, they're so fun. I'd like to make one with leftovers and mini skeins and really go wild with the stripe possibilities.

Tetragon scarf

The pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry. I hope you like it!

Tetragon scarf

Tetragon scarf

Celebration Baktus

Hi everyone! I can't believe it's been so long since my last post! We had a ridiculously hot summer here and then I was just so busy, I didn't really have the inspiration to write much. Now though that I've sorted through some things and feel more relaxed, I can't wait to share all my new projects with you!

I knit a Baktus scarf for the Ravellenics event on Ravelry. It was fun and easy and I used up a bit of my (endless) stash of sock yarn. Since it was for the Greek team, I wanted to take nice pictures for the project and what could be better than the beach?

Celebration Baktus

Έπλεξα ένα κασκόλ Baktus για τα Ravellenics στο Ravelry. Ήταν απλό και ωραίο σχέδιο και χρησιμοποίησα λίγο από το (ατέλειωτο) νήμα για κάλτσες που έχω. Η συμμετοχή ήταν για την ελληνική ομάδα και ήθελα να βγάλω ωραίες φωτογραφίες για το πλεκτό - υπάρχει κάτι καλύτερο από μια παραλία;

Your knitting or crochet hero - Kaffe Fassett - 3KCBWDAY3

Blog about someone in the fibre crafts who truly inspires you. There are not too many guidelines for this, it's really about introducing your readers to someone who they might not know who is an inspiration to you. It might be a family member or friend, a specific designer or writer, indie dyer or another blogger.

Striped T-shirt // πουλόβερ με ρίγες

This topic was a little difficult for me, because there are so many knitters and designers whose work I admire. I finally decided to write about Kaffe Fassett, because it was his amazing patterns that made me want to learn how to knit. Years ago, I found his wonderful book Glorious Knits at my mother's house and I couldn't stop looking at it. I decided to learn how to knit, so that I could try to make all the beautiful things in the book.

Since then, I've gotten two more of his books and they are a constant source of inspiration. He is an amazing artist and I've learned so much about color. I love to read his books over and over again and look at all the wonderful pictures.

striped shawl

carpet cardigan

carpet cardigan

Over the years, I've learned other knitting techniques, but I always go back to working with color. And I think that Kaffe Fassett is the designer whose patterns I've knit the most. Some of my first projects were a striped shawl which was a gift for a friend of mine and a striped T-shirt which always makes me smile when I wear it.

I've also experimented with some of his designs and while I didn't finish those projects, I do want to knit those patterns again sometime. The damask flower is one of my favorites and the carpet pattern is a fantastic mix of intarsia and stripes.

damask flower

Damsask flower // λουλούδι Damask

The Kaffe Fassett pattern I knit and that I'm most proud of is the Persian Poppies vest I made for my mother last year. Three months of knitting, more than twenty colors and a million ends but it was worth it. I think it's the best thing I've ever knit. You can read more about it here and here.

There are times when I just want to knit something simple but when I feel creative, I always turn to Kaffe Fassett's patterns. It's so much fun to play with all the colors and the finished project is always unique and beautiful.

Persian Poppies Vest

socks

I'm also a big fan of the yarns he designed for Regia and I've used his colors many times! I think they are perfect for socks and shawls and I still have some that I'm going to use for a striped cardigan.

Brown-Eyed Susan shawl

I have so many finished projects to show you and I have no idea how this happened. Usually I don't have enough projects to blog about, so I guess I've been knitting a lot lately! I certainly have been enjoying my new shawl, I made good progress this weekend. I also decided to not use the darker pink. I'll be using three different brown colors, so that's probably enough color changes for this shawl. I only have a few more rows left before I start the lace edging. Shawls are misleading though, it always feels like they're fast and then you get to the long rows and they take forever. I think I've knit almost half of the shawl now and I'm looking forward to the lace pattern, which I'll knit with Madelinetosh sock in Kale.

yarn

Juju's Loops and a new shawl

Don't forget to enter the Shades of Light giveaway! The contest is open for a few more days!

new book!

When I saw this book on Ravelry, I ordered it immediately! Published by Loop, a yarn store in London, Juju's Loops is a lovely book filled with amazing patterns. It's not often that I find a book where I want to knit almost everything in it, but this is one of them. Designed by Juju Vail and Susan Cropper, the patterns are feminine, original and absolutely beautiful. The book has patterns for shawls, cardigans, gloves, a hat and lots more! You can see some pictures on the Loop blog and on Ravelry.

Juju Vail also has some lovely free patterns on the Loop blog - I especially love the Crow Waltz Shawl (Ravelry) and the Layering Shrug (Ravelry).

Brown-Eyed Susan shawl

I've already started knitting my first project from the book, the shawl on the cover. I'm using some yarn that I have left over from the Persian Poppies vest and that makes me even more excited about casting on. I love to combine colors and different yarns when I'm knitting and it's not always easy to do that with shawls. This pattern is perfect for a few experiments and I can't wait to see what happens!

So far I've used Claudia Hand Painted Yarns Fingering in Begonia (light pink) and Yarn Love Elizabeth Bennett in Belgian Chocolate, but I'll also use Claudia in Pink Posey and Chocolate and Madelinetosh Sock in Kale.

I got the book from Loop's online shop and it was very hard to not also get some of the lovely yarn they have in the shop!

Brown-Eyed Susan shawl

Brown-Eyed Susan shawl

Stripes

This is my latest project, a cowl from the new Knitscene magazine. I've finished knitting it and I'll block it this weekend. I think I'm getting tired of the winter, I want warm weather and sun and lots of bright colors!

I also think I'm ready to knit a bigger project again, after several small ones. I have a few cardigans waiting for their sleeves and I'll probably work on one of them these days.

Don't forget to enter the Shades of Light giveaway for a chance to win a skein of beautiful yarn! Have a lovely weekend :)

Gray's Ferry Cowl

Persian Poppies Vest - Choosing the colors and getting started

It took me a long time to write this post - after knitting the vest for three months, I needed to take a little break, before I could talk about it! Now that I'm not so stressed about finishing it, I'm just happy about this project and I still can't believe that I actually knit this vest.

Like all Kaffe Fassett patterns, when it comes to color, more is better. The original colors I chose were pretty, but they weren't enough to create the effect I so admired in the book. That was the reason why I didn't start the vest before the summer, as I had originally planned. I'm always saying that I want to only work on a few projects at a time, instead of continuing with my current system which includes almost 40 wips. However, in this case, it was very useful that I had lots of other projects, because one of them was the Beekeeper's Quilt. I had put all the colors for my quilt in bags and one day, I was thinking about what to do with the vest and looking at the yarn for the quilt and... that was the solution!

I didn't feel bad about cutting up all that yarn, because I had already made lots of little hexagons and gotten used to the idea of using a sock yarn for something smaller. And the colors were perfect. It's interesting because even though I had all those colors, I wouldn't have chosen them if I hadn't seen them all together. Now, I can't imagine why I didn't think of it sooner. In order to make the yarn just a little bit thicker, I used two strands throughout: the sock yarn, which I changed often and a laceweight. I used two colors of Madelinetosh Lace, one for the background (a dark green/brown called Terrarium) and one for the poppies (a pink/beige called Rosewood). All the background has one strand of Terrarium and all the poppies are mixed with Rosewood.

Persian Poppies Vest

I modified the pattern slightly, casting on a few extra stitches, because the largest size was a 38 and I wanted to knit a 40-41. I swatched in the pattern and I washed my swatch. I measured one of my mother's vests to get the exact measurements. And after all that, when I had already started knitting, I realized that I could have used the pattern and some simple math to figure out how many stitches I needed. Every size increased the cast on stitches by the same number. Since I had the same gauge, all I had to do was increase again, and I would have the next size. It turns out that all the measuring was useful though, since my row gauge was significantly different than the pattern. And having the same numbers come out twice, with two different methods, meant that I was sure I hadn't made some terrible mistake.

The pattern has a turned hem and knitting that helped me get a feel for the yarn, before starting the colorwork. I found it was hard to choose the colors in the beginning, because there wasn't an established pattern yet and it felt like even one row in the wrong color could change the whole look of the project. And at the beginning, with only a few rows, it can. However, I kept telling myself that it won't matter so much in the finished vest and I kept knitting, without worrying about the colors too much.

I used three background colors - green, red and brown - and I made wide stripes with the colors, trying to change the order occasionaly, so it wasn't too repetitive. I had lots of colors for the poppies and I tried to make every poppy row unique.

Since I worried about sewing up the vest, before I even started knitting, I briefly considered knitting it all in one piece. I'm so happy I didn't though, for four reasons. As the piece I was knitting got bigger, I realized I would have gone crazy trying to work those long rows. Also, I feel that maybe it's better for the fabric if the same yarn is used on smaller sections, instead of around the whole vest. That way, if there's a problem with the tension, or one of the yarns, it will be a lot easier to fix later.

I do also enjoy the different colors; the front pieces and the back all have different poppies. If I had knit them all in one piece, the poppies would have been the same. Finally, I started with the back and that gave me the opportunity to see if some combinations didn't work so well. There are 2-3 rows on the back that I'm not in love with, so I didn't repeat that color combination again.

Even though it sounds like I planned this so well and I did have all the colors in front of me, I couldn't picture what it would actually look like, until I had knit a big section of the back. Knitting is always full of surprises!
