Hats don't count

I said I wouldn't start any more new projects. But... summer is over, it's not so hot and I keep thinking about hats. I tried so hard to resist, but last night I cast on. Malabrigo Worsted in Simply Taupe. Orchids & Fairy Lights by Tiny Owl Knits. Really, how could I resist? I want to wrap myself in Malabrigo, it's so soft and light and perfect. I love this color, it's has just a bit of beige and pink in it.

Orchids & Fairy Lights hat

Το σχέδιο Orchids & Fairy Lights από την Tiny Owl Knits.

Persian Poppies swatch

I finally started working on the vest for my mother and I'm very excited! I've been slowly getting all the yarn I wanted for this and I was a little nervous about how the colors would look in the end. I knit the swatch with only two "colors", one for the background and one for the poppies. The vest will have more color changes, but these were the yarns that I have the most of and I probably won't have to rip the swatch out to use the yarn later.

Persian Poppies swatch

I'm using sock yarn and one strand of laceweight to make it just a little bit thicker, without being too warm. Stranded knitting creates a thicker fabric anyway and it just doesn't get cold enough here for long enough to really need very thick wool sweaters. For the background I used Squoosh Fiberarts Ultra Sock in Happy Trees with Madelinetosh Lace in Terrarium and the poppies are knit with Claudia Handpainted Fingering in Mardi Gras and Madelinetosh Lace in Rosewood.

The original vest pattern has only a couple sizes; the largest size is 38". I'm going to make a 40 or 42 so I'll have to use a different vest pattern for the shaping. All I need to do now is wash the swatch, check my gauge and I can start knitting!

I'm very happy because even though I haven't worked with two colors in a very long time, my knitting seems much more neat and my tension is good too. It's so easy to pull the strands in the back too tight and I was very careful this time. I was also surprised that this seemed to go very fast. Even with all the yarn and counting stitches and looking at the chart, every new row was so much fun and just couldn't put it down.

Craft and biological market in Thessaloniki

Angelika's yarn

I had the most amazing time this morning, my friend Angelika is selling her hand painted yarn and woven scarves at a market here in Thessaloniki. The market looks really interesting, there are people from all over northern Greece selling biological fruit and vegetables and handmade things - jewelry, soap, food, wine and lots more! If you're in Thessaloniki and looking for something fun to do this weekend, it's definitely worth a visit. It's at the Nea Elvetia Park in Harilaou, Friday to Sunday. I'm going again tomorrow, I didn't have time to look at everything today, I admit I couldn't stop looking at Angelika's yarn and planning projects!

Angelika's yarn

Featherweight progress and some socks

So yesterday I wrote that I don't want to knit any shawls for a while. And then I saw Nuvem by Martina Behm. A big, beautiful shawl that has no purling! I wonder how long I'll be able to resist... I'm thinking it will look very interesting with stripes and I do have a lot of sock yarn...

featherweight cardigan

I've been working on my Featherweight cardigan, I finished the body and started the collar. For the body, I knit a lot of 1x1 rib and then I cast off using Jeny's surprinsingly stretchy bind off from Knitty. It's the first time I used it and it took me a few minutes to understand the instructions but once I started, it was really easy. And it is surprisingly stretchy. I'm very impressed and I'll definitely use it again.

The collar rows are long, very very long. Suddenly, I don't feel as close to the end as I thought I was. And I still have the sleeves too. But sleeves are just like socks without heels, so they should go pretty fast.

featherweight cardigan

featherweight cardigan

Speaking of socks, here's the last pair I started. It's my own pattern and I'll probably write it soon. The yarn is from my friend Angelika and I love the colors.

29

It was my birthday on Saturday and it was a lovely birthday! We went out for a coffee and some shopping and my boyfriend cooked a delicious lunch. He made lasagna, which he had never made before and it was amazing. He keeps saying that he doesn't know how to cook, but he most certainly does! On Sunday we went to the beach, had lunch at a restaurant with the most amazing view and at night we went for a walk by the beach. There was a full moon and it was very romantic! We had an amazing weekend and I'm so happy!

So, I'm 29 now and I love it. I remember a time when I thought that getting close to 30 meant that I would be one of those old grown-ups. Now, I feel good about where I am and what I've learned so far. September always feels like the beginning of the new year for me; my birthday, schools starting again and the cooler weather (still waiting for that here!) always made me feel like doing things and starting new things. I've been thinking about maybe learning a new language or taking some lessons in an attempt to remember an old one that I'm forgetting - oh German vocabulary, why do you have to be so hard?

Platamonas

New things usually means new projects as well. However, I'm very excited about finishing up projects before I start anything new. My Featherweight cardigan looks like a cardigan without sleeves and I have some socks that are close enough to being finished that they're worth the effort. I've made some more hexagons and I still love the pattern. Also, I'm running out of needles so aren't many new things that I can do right now. I finished my Damson shawl recently, but I haven't blocked it yet. And I have another shawl pattern that I want to write. And a sock pattern. And I really feel good about working on these projects.

The only new thing I'm going to start is a vest for my mother. She requested it months ago and I finally have all the yarn I need. It's going to be a Persian Poppies vest, a lovely pattern by Kaffe Fassett. I'm going to start it in a few days and it will be my main project until it's finished.

Platamonas

At the beginning of the year I wrote about starting a yarn diet. I haven't posted an update on that in a while because it hasn't been going very well. There are still over three months left in the year and I've decided that instead of focusing on using up yatn, I would like to finish as many old projects as I can. According to Ravelry, I now have 43 wips. A couple will probably be frogged, they're old projects that did not work out, but most of them are lovely and they deserve better. I also have seven single socks and three single gloves. I'm going to try to be a better knitter!

Also, I'm going to try to stop knitting shawls for a while. This year I've knit seven shawls and one scarf. All for me. I think it's time to start working on some cardigans too!

Platamonas

Platamonas

I'm in love...

...with this cardigan. I went out with my friend Dawn yesterday and she showed me her finished Tea Leaves cardigan. I love the color and the garter stitch; it's just perfect. And she found the most perfect buttons too! The yarn is Dream in Color Classy in Spring Tickle. I've been looking at colors online and trying to resist buying some. It's hard. This is definitely something I'm going to knit soon!

Dawn's Tea Leaves cardigan

Το νήμα είναι Dream in Color Classy στο χρώμα Spring Tickle.

The Acropolis Museum

The last time we went to Athens, we didn't go to the museum, so we really wanted to go this time. I'd been to the old museum a couple times with my parents when I was little and while the old museum had the advantage of being on the Acropolis, it was quite small. The new museum is at the beginning of the hill and has a great view of the Acropolis.

at the Acropolis Museum

Having heard so much about the actual building, I was a little disappointed when we first saw it. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but I admit I was expecting something more impressive. However, walking towards it, we saw the first of many wonderful surprises. The path to the entrance is actually a platform made of a clear material with ruins underneath. Very exciting! Just outside the entrance, the platform opens up, revealing some of the ruins underneath. Overlooking the ruins is a marble owl, the symbol of the goddess Athena, who gave her name to the city. According to Greek mythology, Athena and Poseidon both wanted to claim the city. Poseidon offered the water from the sea and Athena offered the olive tree. The citizens chose Athena.

at the Acropolis Museum

These pictures outside are the last ones I took until we got to the third floor terrace; pictures were not allowed in the museum. The tickets are very cheap; if I lived in Athens, I would definitely visit the museum often, it's very peaceful and relaxing inside.

at the Acropolis Museum

at the Acropolis Museum

The exhibits cover three floors and are placed according to the location of where everything was originally found. The first floor has household items that were found around the Acropolis hill and bronze items, the second floor has statues and the third floor has the Parthenon marbles.

The big statues are certainly beautiful and impressive, but I found myself equally drawn to the small items that people used every day. The attention to detail is amazing. My favorites were a collection sewing needles made out of bone, a miniature mirror that was only about 2-3 inches long and various little pots that were painted with geometric patterns.

While I prefer the marble and stone pieces, I must admit that the small bronze items had incredible details and I can't imagine how much work went into creating them.

The second floor has marble statues, displayed in the open for the first time. It's a wonderful experience to walk around them and see them from every angle. I especially loved the statue of a horse, again the details are incredible. I also enjoyed a display of the different kinds of marble used, from many parts of Greece, with information about each one. Another interesting display contained samples of various stones that were used for color. The powdered stone was mixed with wax and used to paint the marble.

Another wonderful feature was the Caryatids display. These statues of women decorated the Erechtheion on the Acropolis. Instead of removing them from the museum to clean them, the archaeologists have developed a unique technique using laser technology in collaboration with a university in Crete. A box is placed over the statue they want to clean and the work being done is shown on a screen. We could actually see how they clean the statues and it was very cool.

The third floor contains the marbles that decorated the Parthenon. They are placed on a rectangular structure the size of the Parthenon and in their correct position. You can see an amazing picture of the display on the museum website. There are also copies of the pieces that are located in other museums. I really believe that anyone who sees this display will be convinced that the rest of the marbles should be returned to Greece. After decades of repeated requests by the Greek government, this museum and it's fantastic display of these pieces is the most compelling argument that the marbles should be returned to Greece, where they belong.

Finally, the third floor also has an area that shows a video about the Parthenon through the ages and describes the parade depicted in the marbles. The Parthenon history section of the video was created by Costa Gavras and was originally censored. I'm so pleased they're showing part of it now. You can watch the full original video here (the link is for the English version). It's a lovely and accurate summary of the Parthenon's history and it's very moving. It also features the wonderful poem by Lord Byron, "The Curse of Minerva". It's definitely worth watching.

The third floor also has a lovely coffee shop and restaurant with traditional Greek recipes. We sat outside and enjoyed a light lunch as well as a lovely view of the Acropolis.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I'm so glad we went. The building itself is very modern and minimal. The almost bare interior is the perfect way to show off these magnificent ancient masterpieces. The only disappointment was the gift shop. While the museum has two shops, there were very few things I wanted to buy, even though I really wanted to bring back a few gifts for my friends. The first shop has a lovely selection of books, but most of them were quite big and heavy and since we had planned to be out all day, they were not something I wanted to carry all around Athens until the evening. However, they did also have a nice selection of children's books and if I had wanted to get some, they would certainly not have been a problem as they were much smaller. The second shop has jewelry and other small items, but the only thing I liked were the mugs. I got one for my mother with some very cute owls on it. Even so, this is definitely the best museum in Greece by far and one of the best I've ever been to.

If you're planning on visiting Athens, you should definitely go, it's a wonderful experience. In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed this little tour of the museum!

at the Acropolis Museum

We went to Athens this weekend and we had a great time! We took the train again and the view was amazing. There were so many fields with golden colors and so many trees on the mountains - I spent more time looking out the window than knitting. The weather in Athens was pleasant, hot but not too hot. We saw our friends, we went shopping and did some sightseeing too.

Athens

I went to my favorite yarn store in Athens and got some replacement tips for the needle I broke a while ago. I bought those wooden needles to knit some Handmaiden Sea Silk yarn I have. However, I started knitting Platamon with them and managed to break them before finishing the shawl. I got three sets of tips, because I know myself and I'll probably break another one soon.

I took two knitting projects along, my Featherweight cardigan and some sock yarn for hexagons. My cardigan is getting longer, I tried it on last night and I'm almost ready to start the ribbing for the body. It was a good project for the trip, simple rows of stockinette, easy to pick up and put down even in the middle of the row.

One of the most exciting things was our visit to the new Acropolis museum; I'll do a separate post on the museum tomorrow.

Athens

A new project

I started a new cardigan and I'm very excited! I asked my friend Angelika to dye some yarn for me with long color repeats and the result is beautiful. The yarn is a lovely wool / bamboo blend and the colors are amazing, although a bit difficult to capture with my camera. I chose the Featherweight cardigan pattern and I'm having so much fun - the stripes are perfect! I can't wait to wear this!
